TRANSMISSIONS OVERVIEW

The International Harvester 706 features an 8-speed transmission that can be upgraded to a 16-speed, enhancing operational flexibility and efficiency in various field conditions. The increased number of gears allows for precise speed adjustments, making it ideal for tasks requiring meticulous control, such as plowing and planting in varying soil types. However, the complexity of a 16-speed system may present challenges in maintenance and operator training compared to simpler transmission options.

Description 8-speed/16-speed

TRANSMISSION 1

The International Harvester 706 features a sliding gear transmission, providing 8 forward and 4 reverse speeds. This design encourages precise control but requires the tractor to be stopped and the clutch engaged for gear changes, which could slow operation during fieldwork. With an oil capacity of 68 quarts (64.4L) using IH Hy-Tran, maintenance of hydraulic performance is critical to avoid system failures.

TRANSMISSION 2

The International Harvester 706 tractor features a pioneering Torque Amplifier (TA) which allows for on-the-move shifting between under-drive and direct drive without clutching, enhancing productivity during field operations. With 16 forward and 8 reverse gears coupled with a 12-inch dry disc clutch, it offers versatility in varying agricultural tasks while the 68 qt oil capacity supports smooth hydraulic operations, critical for optimal performance. However, operators must be adept in managing the TA lever to avoid abrupt changes that could affect traction or load handling during operation.

Description The Torque Amplifier (TA) provides a hydraulically-actuted under-drive that may be shifted, on the move, with any range and speed selection in the main transmission. Using the TA does not require the clutch or stopping the tractor. With the lever in the forward position, the TA is disengaged and the transmission is in direct drive. To slow the tractor (increasing pulling power) the TA lever should be pulled smoothly and quickly to the rear, engaging the TA. To disengage the TA and return to direct-drive, the TA should be moved forward, with a slight pause at the center position of the lever.
